2024 Intention: Go for it.
On Sunday, Charlie and I took a hike with our three-year-old rescue dog, Banks. She has always been a bit tricky to train, and definitely shows her stubborn Great Pyrenees side. We’ve spent hours at dog parks, luring her to the gate with every kind of treat, from peanut butter to bacon. We’ve been late to vet appointments because she wouldn’t come inside from the backyard, and we’ve worked with lots of neighborhood kids to help her feel more comfortable around anyone with unpredictable movements. But on this particular hike, something clicked.
We dropped her leash and cautiously offered her treats, tracking her body language and always ready to pick it back up if she showed signs of bolting. She sprinted like crazy, enjoying a few zoomies along the side of the trail, sniffed some stumps and chomped some sticks, then resumed hiking on pace with us for the next five miles. We finished the hike so proud of her, and of ourselves for continuing to focus on training and giving her opportunities to grow.
We will still walk Banks on leash in our neighborhood, and will likely experience challenging moments with her in the future, but seeing that she’s capable of more reinvigorated us to keep trying, and to keep believing in all she can learn.
As I plan my year, I’m thinking about how I can apply those same lessons to my own business. I’m reinvigorated to set lofty goals, challenge myself creatively, and try new things while also pursuing existing goals. Whether that’s more off-leash hikes with my dog, more published writing about people and places I care about, or more meaningful content work with dream clients, I’m ready for it.
